Maurice Leverne Huggins got his start in the social service field approximately eight years ago as a patrolman and neighborhood resource officer with the North Charleston Police Department (NCPD). In this role, he spearheaded public safety education initiatives and connected community members with valuable resources. In the middle of his four-year NCPD career, Maurice Leverne Huggins completed coursework to obtain his bachelor of science in sociology from Claflin University in Orangeburg, South Carolina.

He went on to serve as a mental health specialist and counselor with Community Resource Solutions in Columbia, South Carolina, where his areas of expertise included behavioral modification and psychosocial rehabilitation services. He also provided case management and recommended various resources according to the specific needs of children and their families.

Since 2015, Mr. Huggins has served as a case manager, human service specialist, and assessment professional with the South Carolina Department of Social Services. This position gives him the opportunity to improve the lives of children by fighting for supportive and abuse-free child-rearing environments.
